The Department of Alabama Service Foundation provides vital support to the Department of Alabama and to the AMVETS posts throughout Alabama.
The Service Foundation:

• Provides medals and certificates for Outstanding JROTC cadets throughout Alabama
• Provide grants which assist veterans in need throughout Alabama

AMVETS offers the following one-year scholarship. It must be used for full-time study at either an undergraduate college or university or an accredited technical/trade school leading to a certificate or degree in the state of Alabama. $1,000 will be awarded and must be used within 12 months of the award date. Any amount remaining unused within the 12 months will be forfeited. The purpose of this scholarship is to make the goal of post secondary education more attainable for the children and grandchildren of veterans by assisting deserving students who might not otherwise have the financial means to achieve their educational goals. A total of one scholarship will be awarded within the state of Alabama. Applicants must meet all of the eligibility requirements listed below and mail the completed application postmarked on or before April 15 to:

Eligibility Requirements:
1. Must be a graduating high school senior entering at the college freshmen level in the upcoming fall semester, or already enrolled in college.
2. Must have a minimum high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0. (Or documented evidence of extenuating circumstances that caused a lower GPA.)
3. Must be the child or grandchild of a United States veteran who is an AMVETS member.
4. Must be a United State citizen.
5. Must demonstrate academic promise and financial need.
6. Must agree to authorize AMVETS to publicize your scholarship ward, if you are selected.
Required Materials:
1. A copy of the veteran’s honorable discharge. (Proof of Honorable Service required) Dependents of current military personnel must submit a letter from the base commander certifying the active duty statreus of the parent.
2. Official high school transcripts including the first grading period of the senior year in high school. Transcripts must be in the 4.0 grade scale, or if in a different system, translated to the 4.0 scales.
3. SAT and/or ACT scores.
4. A copy of the applicant’s Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
5. Provide a short statement, entitled and addressing the theme of “What A Higher Education Means To Me” the statement must be written in space provided on page 5).
6. Acceptance letter from the accredited school you will attend.
7. Proof of college expenses (A copy of expenses out of the college publication will suffice).
8. A resume detailing extracurricular activities, volunteering activities, community services, and jobs held during the past four years.
9. A copy of the veteran’s AMVETS membership card. (The membership card must be that of the individual claiming veteran status on page 2).
